we arrived in Taiwan a little over a month ago. The distant and exotic feeling of being on another side of the earth is starting to fade and in its place a small but growing sense of a normalcy is settling in. What was odd is not as striking as it used to be and everyday I become more accepting as the unfamiliar and unknown become my knowledge and understanding. Its kinda therapeutic. What once was an intimidating language barrier is now a comfortable series of tiny misunderstandings that lead to an eventual message or point. like..."yes, the grapefruit green tea please." Learning mandarin is difficult but being immersed in the culture helps, and you find yourself picking up new pieces everyday.
Taiwan tidbits:
beetle-nuts-people chew or suck on these things and it turns their mouth red and gives them a buzz like a cigarette, which can normally be found in the hand that is not driving the scooter. they are all the rage and their red splatter can be found all over the streets.
Taiwan has a taste. Its not a pleasant one.
Dogs are everywhere, and they know when to cross the streets!
Night markets, arcades, and KTVs are everywhere
Its nice to be a half an hour from the beach or mountains
you don't have to pay labor costs for repairmen, and all prices are even amounts so you can empty your pocket change every few purchases.
every receipt is a lotto ticket and they announce winning numbers bi-monthly.
we pay our bills at any local 7/11(which are also everywhere)
Checking in on you guys makes me feel more culturally diverse. : ) Glad to hear you both are having a good time and settling in.
