A great insight into the deep traditions and culture that Asia is known for. Every three years a boat burning is held on the black beach shores of Donggang, Taiwan. South of our home in Kaohsiung CIty. We hopped a bus with some other foreigner friends of ours and joined in with the locals to participate in this esteemed ritual. Beginning at the temple, honored members of the community start the festivities by playing music and lighting extremely long lasting incense and marching out the temple doors. Others soon follow carrying the masts that will be erected on the boat which already sits on the shore. The less parade like and more jumbled trudge down the main road lasts about two hours. Your entire walk down this narrow street is lined with fireworks, kitsch souvenirs, night market foods, and spectators with cameras at the ready. Think of chaos but add a million NT boat and boatloads of fireworks and you've got the Donggang boat burning festival. This entire event was held between the hours of 11PM-6AM.

there were no rails or ropes or anything to block anyone from walking right up to the fire, so we were able to move in close once people started clearing out.
the most densely polluted walk back to the cabs ive ever taken. so much beetlenut splatter on the streets.
