Typhoons and Cabin Fever

From: Ben
To: The rest of the Thayer clan

Ben: "Ive got it...ive got the madness...ive got cabin feeeveerrrrrr!!!"
Court: "I've got it toooooooo!!"

P.S. all the love in the world.

-----------------------------------------

although we have been in asia for almost two full days we have no pictures yet to share. We have become shut ins in order to recover from severe jet lag and to avoid being swept up in the typhoon that is apparently engulfing the city as we speak. heres a timeline to give you a point of reference.

arrive in Hong Kong: 3:30pm
sleep: 4:30pm until ?; wait, whats today?
break from sleeping: ? until 2 or 3 hrs later
sleep: 2 or 3 hrs later until 2:30pm...the next day

so as you can see we have had little time to explore the outside world and more time to develop small but growing cases of cabin fever. this is evident by this blog/cry for help and our incessant laughter while writing it. however, there is one thing that will awaken any warm blooded mammal out of hibernation...FOOD! Experience with us our half hour outside in the middle of hong kong as you read our anecdotes below. we promise to take pictures and experience something else worth telling in the following few days.

-when in hong kong, dont open the windows to let in fresh air. simply live with what air is in the room b/c however bad it may be, its not near as bad as the "fresh" air you will receive if you open the windows!

-there are some things that are universally funny...like a blood hound running around in circles in order to avoid being mounted by another blood hound. all the while three chinese ladies and two americans standing around a fruit stand laughing, pointing, and mimicking the gesture. the french would never do such a thing.

ben follows the internet signal to the 21st floor of the city gardens hotel; no hes not crazy, hes just laughing at the music coming from the cleaning guys cart down the hall....what you ask?...thats right, its a techno version of the birthday song followed by chariots of fire and home on the range.

-packing tip #67
when minimizing luggage wieght in order to meet airline standards, be sure to prioritize the entertainment pocket of your suitcase. after all, you never know when you might find yourself in the epicenter of an asian typhoon.

  1. So, I gather you're still in Hong Kong - when are you scheduled to leave? Per the time-clock I show it is currently about 4:15 AM Sunday (+13 hours ahead of CDT). Will you have much time to see things in HK? I always enjoyed going to the Island of HK, Kaoloon, and the area called "New Territories". There are some really good restaurants there. Most of the hotels are good (if pricy), but it is hard to know which restaurants are really good - without help. Do you like Chinese? "Happy Family Soup" is usually very good and flavorful (includes vegetables, beef, pork, chicken, and several kinds of seafood). Some restaurants are in floating junks (old style chinese boats) and include ancient dancers and acrobats.
